LFA Directing Tutor’s Feature Film Debuts on Disney+

30 March 2026

Learning to Breathe, directed by London Film Academy’s longtime directing tutor Dan Turner, has recently landed on Disney+. The romantic drama follows the courtship and troubles of a couple and was set and partly filmed on the island of Tobago.

Working with LFA students

Learning to Breathe also shot several sequences in London, on which numerous LFA BA (Hons) Filmmaking students worked as runners on set. Credited LFA students include Victoria Leva, Ari Rissotti, Eric Angelo Yuhico, Karim Naguib, and Karolina Lewszyk. Dan deliberately afforded students this opportunity, having been impressed with them on set throughout the academic year prior to filming.

Dan shared:

I am always looking for students that stand out in a class and keep them in mind for productions. LFA students get trained to a high standard and that makes it easier for me to offer opportunities knowing they’ll do a great job.

While Dan was confident in their talents, he was also pleased to see firsthand how dedicated they were to the project from minute one:

With this film, we had runner opportunities available on the London leg of our shoot and I was very pleasantly surprised at the commitment and professionalism they brought with them. It takes a certain type of person to fit in with a professional crew on a commercial production, but they were just natural.

Finding a new audience

With Learning to Breathe’s launch on Disney+, Dan is excited for new viewers to connect with Noah and Katrina’s story. This new lease of life for the film is emblematic of the current age of distribution and streaming, something that Dan has noticed in recent years:

Distribution has changed a lot over the years that I have been making films and in the past you had a couple of windows for your work, in terms of theatrical, home media and broadcast. With streaming, new deals are made that extend the film’s life and sometimes films can find new audiences over a longer period of time.

He adds that Learning to Breathe offers a more nuanced look at the formation and dissolution of relationships, an element he emphasised while writing the screenplay:

I hope people find the authenticity in the way the relationship plays out. It’s not a Hollywood movie by any stretch and it challenges the viewer how they feel about the two people going through this story. Ultimately, I also hope people relate to the crazy rollercoaster of emotion that comes with a breakup.

Filming reflections

As Dan looks back on the film after nearly a decade, he’s conscious of the similarities between the role of a director and that of an educator. Whether it’s guiding students through their first day in LFA’s studios or helping his cast and crew grapple with mosquitos and mud on the beaches of Tobago, Dan finds common ground in both:

Being a director and an educator are quite similar. You have to lead and inspire people on a daily basis.

Dan has shaped the careers of countless filmmakers that have come through LFA during his time here, and one key piece of advice remains central to his teaching:

I tell students a lot that they need to choose projects they love. Because you need a lot of passion for your film when you’re battling to get it made. It’s a long, long process. From raising the budget to casting to filming, and then to editing and distribution and marketing. You need a project that will continually inspire you for many years. So, choose projects that light a fire in you.
