Arguably, one of the most uplifting developments in cinema over the past decade has been the growing appreciation for documentaries. This enhanced curiosity among audiences, exacerbated by streaming platforms and their never-ending list of newly released series', has given way to a new docu-mania that shows no signs of stopping.
It's a trend that promises social and political engagement seldom attainable through fictional filmmaking. It's giving real individuals a platform and opportunity to narrate their own stories.
However, as tens of millions of people consume documentaries in an unprecedented "golden era" Jennifer Tiexiera and LFA alumna Camilla Hall's provocative documentary film "Subject" urges audiences to consider the often-profound impact on their participants. Showing how the reality is often far more complex than it may initially seem.
A powerful and thought-provoking watch, "Subject" explores the life-altering experience of sharing one’s life on screen through key participants of acclaimed documentaries The Staircase, Hoop Dreams, The Wolfpack, Capturing the Friedmans, and The Square.
These erstwhile documentary “stars” reveal the highs and lows of their experiences and the everyday realities of having their lives put under a microscope. The film seeks to unpack vital issues around the ethics and responsibility inherent in documentary filmmaking, with commentary from influential names in the doc world, Kirsten Johnson, Sam Pollard, Thom Powers and Sonya Childress.
In 2023, LFA is actively emphasising the ethical dimensions and conversations sparked by the film to foster ongoing dialogue and extend the film's influence. As a response, we've coordinated masterclasses, screenings, and Q&A sessions in collaboration with Camilla, with a specific focus on urging action. This involves challenging exploitative practices that result in unjust representations of subjects or the utilisation of their trauma as sensational plot elements in storytelling.
We held an online Q&A session earlier this year with Camilla, moderated by our documentary tutor, filmmaker and activist Manuela Maiguashca. This exclusive virtual event for the Filmmakers’ Club offered a unique chance for current students from various courses, including the Documentary Filmmaking Certificate and Intro to Documentary, as well as alumni, to participate in significant and insightful discussions.
We continued to celebrate “Subjects” unique approach and powerful storytelling with another exclusive event and in-person screening at Picturehouse Fulham. The LFA community watched "Subject" skilfully combine interviews, archival footage, and captivating cinematography on the big screen. It brought the narratives to life and drew us into the heart of each story, with a palpable emotional impact.
Our Joint Principal Anna MacDonald then chaired an audience-led conversation with Camilla. It was an opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue about the issues raised in the film and the audiences’ questions sparked interesting conversations.
We discussed the importance of amplifying these voices that are otherwise exploited, marginalised or overlooked, which further emphasised the documentary's goal to foster awareness and encourage action.
The documentary continues its tour, with an extensive list of film festival recognition since its wider release. Confirming that "Subject" is not merely a film; it's a call to action, urging audiences to reflect on the world around them and consider the untold stories that shape our collective human experience.
Serving as a catalyst for awareness, “Subject” encourages viewers to not only appreciate the artistry of filmmaking but to also consider the impact of their consumption actively on the lives of those who share their stories on screen. "Subject" stands as a powerful testament to the potential of documentaries to inspire reflection, empathy, and, most importantly, positive change in our society.
