Life After LFA: Graduate, Alex Chorley's Filmmaking Career Insights

Now I’m in the industry I appreciate how similar the film projects at LFA are to working on a professional set and it impresses me how quickly everyone’s on the ball, knowing exactly what they’re doing and working together.

Transitioning from LFA into the industry shouldn't evoke apprehension. Instead, after two years of accelerated study, hard work and dedication, graduation should bring a sense of relief and accomplishment for all that you've achieved.  

Recent BA (HONS) Filmmaking graduate Alex Chorley echoes this sentiment. Having graduated from LFA in 2022, Alex has already been involved in countless projects, covering everything from DOP, Colourist, and 1st Assistant Camera roles to acting positions and more. 

Now, having graduated and entered the world of filmmaking, we wanted the latest on life after LFA and where Alex's journey has taken him so far. From shorts and commercials to a web series and a feature film, Alex tells us all about his next steps, with some valuable insights to help ensure you make the most of life after university.  

What was a highlight from your time at LFA? 

One of the standout highlights from Alex's time at LFA was the invaluable hands-on experience with professional-grade equipment. As Alex reminisces, the opportunity to work with actual film was a game-changer, supplying a unique skill set in today's industry where shooting on film is making a resurgence.  

The practical training not only honed technical skills but also instilled a sense of efficiency, something that's crucial in modern filmmaking. 

There aren't many courses or schools where right off the bat you have a chance to work on actual film. It’s an invaluable skill to have.

What was the biggest learning from your time at LFA? 

A significant aspect of Alex's journey at LFA was the collaborative environment fostered here, where like-minded individuals come together to create and learn. From exchanging favourite films to working on smaller projects between classes, the LFA community encouraged creativity and growth.  

Moreover, the exposure to various departments allowed Alex to understand the intricacies of filmmaking, enhancing the need for versatility and adaptability— traits essential in the dynamic landscape of the filmmaking industry. 

Without doing courses like this I wouldn't have had the chance to hone my skills and develop.

How did you find transitioning from LFA into the industry? 

Upon graduating in 2022, Alex ventured into assistant camera work, gradually transitioning into roles as a Director of Photography (DOP) and continued to explore other sides of filmmaking.  

Networking has also played a pivotal role, as Alex seized opportunities, built a portfolio, and established connections within the industry.  

From shooting promotional content for local businesses to working on feature films in international settings like Austria, Alex's journey exemplifies the power of perseverance and exploring every opportunity that comes your way. 

Thanks to LFA, I've had the chance to go from the conception of an idea to seeing it on the big screen, which has allowed me to get the kind of opportunities I’ve had.

What have you been up to since graduating from LFA? 

Alex's journey thus far has showcased a multifaceted approach to creativity, extending beyond traditional filmmaking roles. From pursuing acting to exploring music composition and opera singing, Alex embodies versatility—a quality that has enriched both personal and professional pursuits.  

Embracing various creative avenues not only expands opportunities but also enhances storytelling from different perspectives, something LFA continually emphasises. 

With the people that I've met along the way I'm in the process of starting up a production company.

How have you navigated any post-graduation challenges? 

Reflecting on the challenges post-graduation, Alex emphasises the importance of persistence and resourcefulness. Building a diverse portfolio, staying connected with peers and mentors, and embracing passion projects were key strategies in overcoming obstacles and securing opportunities in the competitive industry landscape. 

I found asking my classmates if they were involved in any productions and whether I could come along with them helped me get started.

What does the future hold? 

Alex's journey continues with the establishment of a production company and the pursuit of ambitious projects. With a focus on storytelling, collaboration, and continuous learning, Alex's journey epitomises the spirit of innovation, community and resilience ingrained through LFA's courses.

I think it's important to try and learn as much you can while you're at LFA in all the positions available and be open-minded because you might find you're doing something completely different afterwards.
