LFA Alumni Alice Rosso transitioned from the world of copywriting in Italy to becoming a successful Screenwriter and Director.
We enjoyed catching up with Alice to discuss her journey, her time at LFA, and her upcoming projects, including her directorial debut, 'Breaking Waves'.
The Leap into Filmmaking
Alice's journey into film didn’t follow a traditional path. Originally from Italy, she began her career as a copywriter but soon realised that the creative outlet it provided wasn’t enough.
Her pursuit took her first to New York, where she enrolled on a short course in screenwriting and found her passion. But when it was time to return to Europe, Alice knew London was the place to be.
A Hands-On Education at LFA
Alice’s time at LFA proved to be exactly what she was looking for, with the MA Screenwriting (formerly Screenwriting Diploma) offering the practical learning she needed.
She also emphasised the collaborative nature of the course:
One of Alice’s fondest memories of LFA was the masterclasses with industry professionals. She recalls how the amazing guest speakers she encountered provided invaluable opportunities, some of whom she later worked with, helping her build a strong network and reiterating the LFA collaborative approach.
These connections gave her the foundation she needed to navigate the competitive world of film and television, where she knew a strong network would be essential.
Transitioning from LFA to the Film Industry
Leaving the structured environment of LFA and stepping into the film industry brought challenges, but Alice embraced the unpredictability.
During her time at LFA, Alice learned the crucial importance of pitching, a skill that took time to develop. She discovered that being authentic and excited about her project was key, as passion often inspires others.
Alice also highlighted the need for thorough preparation and appreciated the importance of not only knowing your project but also researching the person you're pitching to, finding common ground, and keeping the conversation engaging can make the world of difference.
Breaking Waves: Alice’s Directorial Debut
Alice’s latest project, 'Breaking Waves', marks her first feature-length documentary as a director.
The film follows Kelda, the first para-athlete to row solo across the Atlantic, as she raises money for her charity, Climbing Out, which helps people affected by trauma rebuild their confidence through outdoor adventures.
Over five years, Alice and her team worked tirelessly to bring the project to life. They shot in stages, raised money, and eventually finished the film.
It’s now being submitted to festivals, and they're waiting for their premiere, where the response so far has been incredible.
For Alice, 'Breaking Waves' has been a deeply personal project and journey.
This connection and understanding has undoubtedly impacted the film creation and we're excited to watch the hard work and collective efforts of everyone involved.
Advice for Aspiring Filmmakers
Reflecting on her journey, Alice offers valuable advice for current and prospective LFA students.
Building relationships, she says, is key.
Alice also reiterates the importance of persistence, knowing that the film industry isn’t easy, but if you love what you do and keep pushing forward, you’ll be sure to find your way.
