Molly Manning-Walker: From Documentary Filmmaker to Fiction Visionary

For Molly Manning-Walker, filmmaking started with a passion for storytelling through visuals.

I started doing film and photography at A-Level and made a documentary about the Occupy movement, a political movement at the time.

Her documentary work was grounded in curiosity and a drive to uncover untold stories, a foundation that has shaped her approach to fiction filmmaking. Molly described how moving into fiction allowed her to delve into deeper emotional truths.

Documentaries taught me to be curious and to connect with people. That’s something I carry into all my work, even in fiction. You’re still asking questions—you’re just exploring them differently.

2023 marked a milestone year for Molly, with her projects, such as the film 'How to Have Sex', receiving widespread acclaim. She urged students to embrace the long and often unpredictable creative development journey.

The path isn’t always straightforward. It took years of experimentation, failures, and small victories to find my voice and gain confidence as a filmmaker.

Ivana MacKinnon: Producing Stories That Matter

As a producer, Ivana MacKinnon brought a wealth of experience and practical knowledge to the discussion. Known for championing bold, original stories, she described the importance of aligning with projects that resonate personally.

Producing is about bringing a vision to life, but also about making sure that vision reflects something authentic and impactful.

Ivana also highlighted the film industry's ever-evolving nature. She discussed how streaming platforms and global collaborations are reshaping opportunities for filmmakers, emphasising the importance of adaptability.

The landscape is changing so quickly. It’s an exciting time to be in the industry, but it’s also a time where you have to stay sharp and open to learn.

For aspiring producers, her advice was clear: focus on relationships and persistence.

At its core, this industry is about people. Find your tribe, collaborate, and create stories that mean something. And don’t be afraid of the long game—great projects take time to nurture.

The Power of Mentorship and Collaboration

Both Molly and Ivana emphasised the importance of mentorship and collaboration, sharing how these elements had been crucial in their careers.

Danny Leigh steered the conversation toward practical advice for LFA students, leading to some of the most memorable quotes of the evening:

Molly Manning-Walker:

Trust your voice. The stories you want to tell are valid and important. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. And if they do, prove them wrong with your work.

Molly Manning-Walker

Ivana MacKinnon:

Resilience is key. You will hear ‘no’ a lot, but don’t let that discourage you. Every ‘no’ is a step closer to the right ‘yes.

Ivana MacKinnon

The panellists also encouraged students to take advantage of every opportunity to gain experience, whether through independent projects, internships, or collaborations with peers.

The industry is tough, but it’s also full of people who want to see you succeed. Build your network, support others, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
