4 Essential Practices for Student Filmmakers During Neurodiversity Celebration Week

22 March 2024

This Neurodiversity Celebration Week, LFA wants to spotlight the diverse spectrum of human experience by recognising neurological differences and the considerations aspiring filmmakers can make to accommodate them.

In filmmaking, inclusivity isn't just about fostering creativity.

It's about embracing diverse perspectives, and for LFA filmmaking students, learning to create inclusive sets is essential.

Here are five practices to ensure every voice is heard and valued in the filmmaking process:

1. Diverse Casting and Crew:

Encouraging casting directors to prioritise diversity and representation ensures authentic portrayals that reflect our world.

LFA's diverse cohort intake champions this and enables students to assemble crews with varied backgrounds, experiences, and identities.

This enriches the creative process with diverse perspectives, showing that true diversity and inclusion should extend well beyond ticking boxes.

2. Creating a Respectful Environment:

Respect is a fundamental part of inclusivity.

That's why it's important to create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.

Establish clear conduct guidelines on set, with zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment, or microaggressions. Foster open communication and active listening among all team members.

By championing mutual respect, you’ll be able to foster creativity.

3. Accessibility Considerations:

Factor in the accessibility needs of all involved in the production. Ensure filming locations are accessible and equipped with accommodations for individuals with diverse needs.

Be mindful of neurodiversity and provide support for those requiring specific accommodations.

4. Collaborative Decision-Making:

It’s important to promote a collaborative decision-making process that takes input from every team member. Continue to create an environment where ideas are welcomed irrespective of hierarchy and differing abilities.

At LFA we want to continue to empower filmmaking students to contribute their unique perspectives and ideas, regardless of their experience level and acknowledge that diversity of thought enhances storytelling and problem-solving.

We know that creating an inclusive film set requires intentional effort and commitment from everyone involved, which is why we’ll be continuing our efforts and encouraging diversity in casting and crewing, creating a respectful environment for all, considering accessibility needs, embracing collaborative decision-making, and investing in education and training.

Our aspiring filmmakers of the future can help create a more inclusive and equitable industry. Together, we can build a future where every voice is heard, and every story is valued.
